Women in Sport was founded in 1984 with a clear mission: to break down barriers and create lasting change for women and girls in sport. For over 40 years they have worked tirelessly to tackle the deep-rooted gender inequalities that still exist.
The increased visibility and celebration of women’s sporting achievements – like the Lionesses’ historic UEFA Euro 2022 victory – have been game changing. When girls see themselves reflected at the top of sport, they see they belong and can dream of a future filled with the exhilaration, passion and most importantly, the joy sport can bring.
Their charity believes sport can give girls and women resilience, courage, self-belief, and a sense of belonging. They have made great strides, but significant barriers remain. Gender stereotypes continue to hold girls and women back from sport, and in life.
- 1.3 million girls fall out of love with sport as teenagers
- 61% of teenage girls feel judged when doing sport
- Only 23% girls play football, compared to 57% of boys
- Only 38% of girls are dreaming of reaching the top of sport, compared to 59% of boys
Women in Sport are determined to change this. Through their campaigning, advocacy, and ground-breaking research, they are reshaping the future of sport for women and girls. This vision is being made into reality, with the vital backing of partners like Mars Wrigley Confectionery supporting Women in Sport charity. Together we can create a world where no-one is excluded from the joy, fulfilment, and lifelong benefits of sport.
